Parcels Ride Along

Cities already contain many passenger trips while delivery fleets drive additional routes to serve parcels. Crowdsourced delivery asks whether some parcels can travel on trips that were going to happen anyway, reducing the work assigned to dedicated vehicles.

A conventional hub fleet first serves every package. A second run offers payments for useful detours by ordinary travelers and leaves the remaining parcels to dedicated vans. A third possibility lets a parcel change vehicles when no single existing trip can cover its journey. Watching dedicated mileage fall across these options reveals the value of matching parcels to mobility already present in the city. The difficulty is not merely finding a nearby driver: pickup, drop-off, detour, timing, and possible handoff must all fit. The example is illustrative, but its central question is practical: when does buying a small detour save more dedicated driving than dispatching another delivery trip?
