Percolation in Traffic Networks

Where the Network Breaks

City roads do not all deteriorate at once. Some still carry traffic near their usual speed while others slow sharply, and the usable network can break into separate connected regions. Percolation analysis asks how that connectivity changes as the standard for a sufficiently fast road is tightened.

The film first colors roads by their speed relative to their own free-flow speed. It then raises the filtering threshold and pauses at several values, highlighting the largest remaining connected pieces. A road improvement is useful in this framework when it reconnects substantial regions, not simply because that road is slow. The comparison also shows that a link with little effect under one traffic state may become critical at another time. This matters for targeted network management: the most valuable bottleneck to relieve can change as congestion moves. The displayed critical links depend on the chosen threshold and traffic snapshot, so they are structural diagnostics rather than permanent labels on roads.
