How service design shapes waiting, transfers, and capacity.
Service moves with its passengers
Bus bunching can begin with a very small delay. A bus that reaches a stop late finds more passengers waiting, spends longer boarding them, and falls farther behind. The following bus encounters fewer waiting passengers and catches up. The original even spacing can collapse into a pair of buses followed by a long gap.

Widening a road may shorten car trips at first. But if some bus passengers respond by driving, bus ridership falls. A transit agency trying to balance its budget may then run fewer buses, making transit less attractive and sending still more travelers to cars.

A longer urban train could carry more passengers, but extending every platform is costly. The front-and-rear operating idea uses a train longer than its platforms while controlling where it stops and which doors open, so travelers can still reach the correct station safely.

A trunk bus line can move people efficiently along a corridor, yet passengers living far from its stops may face a long walk at both ends of the trip. That access burden can make an otherwise fast line unattractive.

Fixed-route buses avoid repeated detours, but in a thinly populated corridor they may require many passengers to walk far from their doors. A flexible service can keep a general travel direction while deviating sideways to reach scattered requests. Which design works better depends on how many requests appear.

Conventional transit often asks a passenger from a branch route to leave one vehicle, wait, and board another on the main line. Modular transit proposes a different physical transfer: compatible vehicle units can separate and join while passengers remain seated in the unit serving their destination.

Driving all the way into a city can mean queueing at a bottleneck, searching the street grid for parking, and paying a high parking charge. Park and ride offers a different chain: drive to an outer facility, leave the car, and complete the urban leg by bus.

Transit design has two distances to consider: how far passengers walk between stops and how long they wait between vehicles. Closely spaced stops improve access but can slow a route, while frequent buses reduce waiting but require more service. A design that looks convenient in one dimension may be poor in another.

Where should a transit network offer direct service, and where are transfers acceptable? A radial system connects outlying places to a center, a grid offers many cross-city paths, and a hybrid tries to match each pattern to the part of the city where it works best.
