VISUAL ESSAY / TRAFFIC FLOW

The Cell Transmission Model

FIELD GUIDE

The Road in Small Steps

Following every car is one way to simulate traffic, but large roads and networks often need a simpler description. The cell transmission model divides a road into short pieces and advances traffic in time steps, moving vehicles from one piece to the next only when upstream demand and downstream space allow it.

A continuous vehicle scene runs above its cell-based counterpart. The matching road sections and nearby vehicle counts make the approximation visible: an evolving queue on the road appears as changing occupancy across discrete cells. The important mechanism is the limit on transfers between cells. When the next cell cannot receive more traffic, vehicles remain upstream and congestion propagates backward, even though individual vehicles still want to move forward. Discretization makes that dynamic practical to compute without discarding vehicle conservation. The video uses one illustrative scenario to show how a compact numerical model can preserve the essential movement of traffic waves.
